An article at Gamasutra takes an in-depth look at how Zynga's new
browser-based social game CityVille managed to [0]accumulate tens of
millions of players in the relatively short time since its launch early
this month. Quoting: "The Facebook interface induces a high degree of
user blindness. It does not do a great job of exposing new games and
applications, and lacks a directory or a 'Featured in the App Store'
style of editorial (as Apple does for the iPhone), which means that for
most developers there are huge problems in getting their games in front
of users' eyeballs. With all of the free advertising channels on the
platform now constrained or dead, this has meant that the Facebook
economy has been acquiring an increasingly Darwinian shape. Where it used
to be an egalitarian environment in which any developer could strike it
big, over the last year it has become top-heavy with larger developers
accruing exponential success, and cutting off oxygen to smaller companies
by default."

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "Proctors and teachers can't watch everyone while
they take tests — not when some students can text with their phones in
their pockets, so with tests increasingly important in education — used
to determine graduation, graduate school admission and, the latest, merit
pay and tenure for teachers, Trip Gabriel writes that [1]schools are
turning to "data forensics" to catch cheaters, searching for data
anomalies where the chances of random agreement are astronomical. In
addition to looking for copying, statisticians hunt for illogical
patterns, like test-takers who did better on harder questions than easy
ones, a sign of advance knowledge of part of a test or look for unusually
large score gains from a previous test by a student or class. Since
Caveon Test Security, whose clients have included the College Board, the
Law School Admission Council and more than a dozen states and big city
school districts, began working for the state of Mississippi in 2006,
cheating has declined about 70 percent, says James Mason, director of the
State Department of Education's Office of Student Assessment. "People
know that [2]if you cheat there is an extremely high chance you're going

adeelarshad82 writes "IBM says they have [0]made a significant leap
forward in the viability of "Racetrack memory," a new technology design
which has the potential to exponentially increase computing power. This
new tech could give devices the ability to store as much as 100 times
more information than they do now, which would be accessed at far greater
speeds while utilizing "much less" energy than today's designs. In the
future, a single portable device might be able to hold as much memory as
today's business-class servers and run on a single battery charge for
weeks at a time. Racetrack memory works by storing data as magnetic
regions (also called domains), which would be transported along nanowire
"racetracks." Instead of forcing a computer to seek out the data it
needs, as traditional computing systems do, the information would
automatically slide along the racetrack to where it could be used."

modules are developed and contributed by PHP programmers who understand
how to use one or more of the Drupal application programming interfaces

the First Amendment requires us to put our principles before our

RedEaredSlider writes "Increased solar activity could give residents of
the continental U.S., southern Europe and Japan the [0]chance to see the
northern lights for the first time in several years. The National Weather
Service's Space Weather Prediction Center says the sun is entering a
period of high activity, marked by more sunspots and a greater chance of
a coronal mass ejection, or CME, hitting the Earth. That would result in
auroras being visible much further from the poles than they usually are."

GMGruman writes "Anyone in IT has a story or two involving stupid users,
crazy co-workers, kludgy technology, and airhead managers. Lisa
Blackwelder has collected [0]top tales of the tech trenches, covering
user antics, office politics, and unusual technical challenges that IT
pros faced (usually) with aplomb, insight, and savvy."
