An anonymous reader writes "In a document available from the NSA
(warning, PDF file), that organisation [0]advises users to upgrade to
Windows 7 as part of their Best Practice for Securing a Home Network. No
mention of BSD or Linux so I guess the Slashdot crowd will just have to
bite the bullet and change operating systems if they want to be really
secure."

Reader Tom Hudson, and now several others, have submitted the news that
[0]Osama Bin Laden is reportedly dead, and that his body is in the hands
of the US military. A [1]statement from President Obama is expected
shortly. Watch this space for more details. Update: 05/02 04:01 GMT by
[2]T : More [3]coverage at ABC News, [4]at CNN, and [5]at Al Jazeera. The
reports say that Bin Laden was actually killed about a week ago by a bomb
in Pakistan, and the time taken to confirm his identity via DNA testing
helped delay the news. In downtown Austin, Texas, in the time since the
story broke I've heard what sound like numerous celebratory gunshots.

market for a security vendor to supply anti-virus software for its
40,000-odd desktop PCs and laptops, as well as servers. But the
department's not just running Windows — it runs Mac OS X and Linux as
well, and has requested that whatever solution it buys [0]must be able to
run on those platforms as well. But have we reached the stage were Mac OS
X and Linux even need third-party security software? It seems like most
Mac and Linux users don't run it."

the SpiderMonkey JavaScript engine. InfoQ had a [1]small Q&A with Lead
Developer David Anderson, about this new development that could bring
significant improvements in products that use the SpiderMonkey engine
like Firefox, Thunderbird, Adobe Acrobat, MongoDB and more. This new JIT
infrastructure, will feature SSA compiler intermediate representations
which will facilitate advanced optimizations such as type specialization,
function inlining, linear-scan register allocation, dead-code
elimination, and loop-invariant code motion."

on the particulars. According to a short post on the site, the services
were taken down after an [1]investigation revealed a deeper 'intrusion'
than expected at first. This is the first we have heard that Sony's
MMORPG arm had some sort of security breach. This could be part of Sony's
plans to beef up security for the PlayStation Network, but this message
seems to indicate that something more serious going on."

Sohaib Athar, a.k.a. @ReallyVirtual, had no idea the helicopters he was
complaining about on twitter were [0]part of the top secret mission that
killed Osama bin Laden Sunday night. 10 hours before bin Laden's death
was announced Athar posted: "Helicopter hovering above Abbottabad at 1AM
(is a rare event)." From the article: "During the raid, Athar speculates
that he was two or three kilometers away from the shooting that took
place. Once news broke that bin Laden had been killed in Abbottabad,
Athar tweeted, 'Uh oh, now I'm the guy who liveblogged the Osama raid
without knowing it.'"

keeping tabs on how much data is being transferred through their home
Internet connections. None of the consumer routers I've used seem to make
this information easily accessible. I'd like some way to see exactly how
much data has been sent and received by the WAN port facing my ISP's
modem so I can compare the numbers I get with the numbers they give me. I
don't want to pay for their modem firmware updates and other network
management traffic, so I'd like to see how the two numbers line up."

$50 million in the wake of revelations that their phones might be
tracking their locations. The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for
the Eastern District of Michigan on April 27, is seeking class-action
status. The plaintiffs, Julie Brown and Kayla Molaski, are residents of
Oakland County. The two [1]say in the suit that Google's privacy policy
did not say that the phones broadcast their location information.
Further, they say Google knew that most users would not understand that
the privacy policy would allow for Google to track users' locations."
Apple was sued for their location tracking [2]last week. According to Boy
Genius Report, iOS tracking will be [3]addressed in version 4.3.3, which
is due out within a couple weeks.

University of Melbourne led study. The study ... provides the first

Lead author Dr. Alex Fornito from the Neuropsychiatry Centre at the
University of Melbourne said the findings have important implications for
understanding why some people are better able to perform certain tasks
than others and the genetic basis of mental illnesses and some
neurological diseases."

applications. Other bidders will have until June 13 to submit competing

Trailrunner7 writes "Crimeware kits have become a ubiquitous part of the
malware scene in the last few years, but they have mainly been confined
to the Windows platform. Now, reports are surfacing that the first such
kit [0]targeting Apple's Mac OS X operating system has appeared. The kit
is being compared to the Zeus kit, which has been one of the more popular
and pervasive crimeware kits for several years now. A report by CSIS, a
Danish security firm, said that the OS X kit uses a template that's quite
similar to the Zeus construction and [1]has the ability to steal forms
from Firefox." Mac users are also being targeted by [2]a new piece of
scareware called MAC Defender.

controversial WikiLeaks spokesman calls Facebook "[0]the most appalling
spy machine that has ever been invented." He continues, "Here we have the
world's most comprehensive database about people, their relationships,
their names, their addresses, their locations and the communications with
each other, their relatives, all sitting within the United States, all
accessible to US intelligence. Facebook, Google, Yahoo – all these major
US organizations have built-in interfaces for US intelligence. It's not a
matter of serving a subpoena. They have an interface that they have
developed for US intelligence to use. Now, is it the case that Facebook
is actually run by US intelligence? No, it's not like that. It's simply
that US intelligence is able to bring to bear legal and political
pressure on them. And it's costly for them to hand out records one by
one, so they have automated the process. Everyone should understand that
when they add their friends to Facebook, they are doing free work for
United States intelligence agencies in building this database for them."

just two weeks [1]when it suffered its first outage, caused by a power
failure. Things got really interesting the next day, when a VMware
employee [2]accidentally caused a second, more serious outage while a
VMware team was writing up a plan of action to recover from future power
loss incidents. An inadvertent press of a key on a keyboard led to 'a
full outage of the network infrastructure [that] took out all load
balancers, routers, and firewalls... and resulted in a complete external
loss of connectivity to Cloud Foundry.' Clearly, human error is still a
major factor in cloud networks."
